⚡ The 7 German Verb Behavior Groups

Mastering German verbs is simple once you recognize their structural behavior patterns:

1. Regular Weak Verbs

Follows standard -e, -st, -t, -en endings (lernen, machen, spielen).

2. Vowel-Change Strong Verbs

Stem vowel changes in du/er: e→i (geben), e→ie (sehen), a→ä (fahren).

3. Separable Prefix Verbs (Trennbare)

Prefixes jump to end of clause: ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, mit- (aufstehen, einkaufen).

4. Inseparable Prefix Verbs

Never separate and no ge- in Perfekt: be-, ent-, er-, ver-, zer- (verstehen, bezahlen).

5. Modal Auxiliary Verbs

Können, müssen, dürfen, wollen, sollen, mögen + second verb in infinitive at the end.

6. Reflexive Verbs

Paired with reflexive pronouns mich/dich/sich (sich freuen, sich erinnern).

7. Irregular Core Verbs

Sein, haben, werden, wissen — the essential auxiliary foundation.
